I recently had a chance to do some surf traveling in Northern California and scored at Andrew Molera State Park in Big Sur! My trip started out in San Francisco, where we got a few days of surf at the Beach, then cruised south, stopping in Santa Cruz, and then on to Andrew Molera.

Skateboarding at Alondra Park in Lawndale, California
By Rick Bickerstaff
When I moved to Los Angeles five years ago, I have to admit I was a little unsure about what to expect from LA skaters. It's a big city where the level of skating is sky high, and so I imagined territorial skaters protecting their pieces of turf in the vast concrete expanse of Southern California skateparks. To my surprise, though, I found the opposite...
Most skateparks I visit are filled with kids who love skating and love the people they skate with. But I just had a particularly awesome skate session at the Alondra Park in Lawndale, CA, and as I reflected on the sweetness that happened, I wanted to share some things that made it stand out amongst the plethora of skate spots LA has to offer.

Surfing and Knowing Your Limits | Surf Your Sweet Spot
By Rick Bickerstaff
As this winter comes to a close, and on the heels of a post about humility, I thought I'd write one more "lesson-learned" blog, seeing as that's a lot of what's been happening to me lately.
It was the first day that I had surfed in weeks. I got a new job, moved and had a kid all in a two week span, so something's had to give, and in this case it was pretty much everything... including surfing. Well, my friend asked me to go surfing and my incredible wife agreed to watch our daughter while I went out on what looked like a pretty standard day. When we got to the beach though, we found huge closeouts breaking far out amongst heavy white-water...ugh.

4 Spots, 5 Years | Los Angeles' Most Popular Surf Breaks
Los Angeles is a tough town, full of cutthroat executives and self-preservationists living alongside an influx of dreamers that will do anything for free if it’s good for their career. LA will either make or break you...actually, even if it makes you there’s a good chance some breaking will still be involved. But as every surfer knows, a good break can be a wonderful thing (see what I did there?), and for me, the last four years have been marked by a different break every summer. So if you’re new to town, here’s the breakdown of what some of our most popular beaches have to offer.

3 Things I Learned Surfing El Nino 57 Days in a Row
By Dave Pascoe
3 Things I Learned from Surfing 57 Days in a Row:
With January approaching and the Southern California swell finally beginning to pick up, frustrated Santa Barbara surfers are finally getting their fix. Flat spells hit every summer, when swells are blocked by the Channel Islands and parts of the Pacific turn into a lake. After such a long stretch of nothing but ripples, I can’t help but think back to the amazing El NiƱo winter in 2009 when I surfed 57 days in a row.
At the time, I was a freshman in college, recently relocated from the frigid waters just north of San Francisco and basking in my newfound proximity to what have become some of my all-time favorite breaks. To celebrate my good luck and the seemingly tropical temperatures - at least compared to what I was used to back at home - I made it a point to catch at least three waves every single day during UCSB’s winter quarter, and I almost made it.
