Snowboard Art | Display Your Snowboard Deck Art!

When you first look at a snowboard in a shop, or online for that matter, you often see them categorized in one of a few ways. Typically, this is by if the intended use is freeride, or deep powder use, or any other various type of board. After that, typically you can search by size. But the big thing that every customer sees is the graphic on the board...

Top 5 Apps for Snowboarders

A cell phone on the slopes when I first started snowboarding was something that you didn’t really see. Now, years later, it is common to see a phone - typically a smart phone - in nearly each person’s hand at some point. While it can be a distraction, it can be extremely beneficial out on the slopes, assuming your battery lasts through the day. Here are five apps that any snowboarder should have - or at least try out.

The Zen of Snowboarding | Stay in the Moment, Enjoy the Ride!

Many sports are seasonal, and snowboarding is one that is forced to be due to weather conditions in most places. To most people, this means that the end of the snowboarding season can be a sad time and it might feel like a long wait until you can get out on the powder again. This can also make those last trips to the mountain slightly bittersweet, as it won’t be long before spring is here and you are thinking about next season.

This is exactly why snowboarding can be a lesson in Zen Buddhism: the belief that reclaiming the present and being here in the moment is important. By remembering this, you can fully enjoy the last days on your board enjoying the moment instead of dreading the oncoming summer. Although there are places to travel and snowboard year round, many people don’t live near these and need to follow the seasonal path.

Ski Tips for Saving Money on Meals | Cheap Eats on the Mountain

Last week we took a look at how to find cheap lift tickets when you’re planning a trip this winter. This week we’re going to show you how to save even more money on your next ski or snowboard adventure by eating cheap on the mountain.

There is no denying that snowboarding and skiing are expensive sports.
After you get past the price of equipment there are still lift tickets, travel fees (gasoline, etc), and, of course, the cost of eating. Though many people opt to eat meals at the lodge or a restaurant in the resort village, there are far more effective and affordable ways to fuel up on tasty food while you’re at the mountain.

Setting Up Your Snowboard Stance - Binding Angle

Setting up your snowboard’s stance is imperative to your health and will be a big factor in how quickly you can progress your skills. As mentioned in last week’s article, the two most important aspects of your stance are the width of your stance and the angle you have your feet turned. Dialing in these parameters will save your ankles, knees, and will put you in a mechanically advantageous position for balance, and thus, proper technique.

How to Set Your Snowboard Stance

Whether you are just starting out or are a seasoned veteran, getting your stance right is imperative. There are two main reasons why your stance is important. First, having the proper stance helps prevent injuries by putting your knees and ankles at more natural angles. Second, a proper stance promotes better technique when riding which will lead to lower fatigue and growth in your skills.

What's a YOLO Flip | I-Pod's Gold Medal Trick Explained

By Andrew Sachs
The biggest news out of X-Games Tignes is that Iouri Podlatchikov, aka I-Pod, nailed the first ever (what announcers called) Cab double cork 1440 in competition history in the snowboard superpipe finals.  He who lands the trick gets to name it: I-Pod's calling it the YOLO Flip (even though you flip twice).  This new trick follows on the heels of the breakthrough of the Triple Cork at X-Games Aspen.

To understand the trick, start with its traditional name:
  • Cab = switch frontside.  I-pod said himself that the term "Cab", which comes from Steve Caballero of skateboarding legend, should be reserved for skateboarding tricks.  He refers to the YOLO Flip as a switch frontside trick.
  • Double Cork = 2 inverts
  • 1440 = 2 inverts + 2 rotations
To see how all that happens at once to create the YOLO Flip, check out the frame-by-frame breakdown, below.  Unfortunately, we didn't make it to X-Games Tignes this year, so we have to rely on grainy zoomed-in video stills...

In frame 1, you can see I-Pod hitting the pipe in switch and starting to spin frontside, hence the Cab/switch frontside reference.

1
2
I-Pod is completely vertical in frame 2, on his way to full inversion in frames 4-7 as part of his first cork...

3
4

5
6
7
Completing his first cork, I-Pod flips back upright through frames 8-11.  Of course, he is still only about halfway through the 4 total rotations (spins + flips) that make this trick a 1440...

8
Grabs anyone?  I-Pod's on it...

9
Would love to see that fan's picture in frame 10...

10
11
Here we go again as I-Pod starts to invert himself as he heads into cork 2...

12
13
And completely inverted for the second time, frames 14 and 15.

14
15
Still spinning...
16
17
Coming out of his second inversion...

18
19
Dipping below the lip of the pipe and finishing the 1440 rotation...

20
21

And I-Pod stomps out the landing in frame 21 to complete the trick for the first time ever in competition.  So how come he ended up in 4th place?  On his last trick he landed like this...

Although I-Pod would have liked to nail that last trick and end up with Tignes gold, he said after the event that he wouldn't trade landing the YOLO flip for gold...he called it "the best fourth place ever."  I would have to agree with him.  It also seems that landing the YOLO Flip was a message to Shaun White that he better be ready for the 2014 winter olympics in Sochi.  It's on.

Winter X-Games: Day 1 Highlights

WINTER X-GAMES: DAY 1 HIGHLIGHTS
 By Andrew Sachs

Snowmobile Freestyle

Levi LaVallee snatched the first gold medal of the Winter X-Games 2013 by winning the Snowmobile Freestyle event.  LaVellee avoided the brutal crashes that took out some of his toughest rivals to grab gold.  His score of 89 beat out Joe Parsons, who scored 88.66, and Justin Hoyer, who managed an 84.

The finals started out with a bang when Caleb Moore, last year’s bronze medalist, under rotated an indy air backflip and as a result, his snowmobile landed on top of him.  Moore was motionless for a few minutes before he came to.

LaVallee seized the opening in the finals created by the crashes and mechanical failures to launch solid combinations, including a huge kiss-of-death flip, and grab winter-X gold.  He will also compete this weekend in GoPro Best Trick Freestyle, SnoCross, and Speed & Style.

Snowboard SuperPipe

Shaun White faces an uphill battle to claim his 9th X games superpipe gold medal after qualifying for the finals second behind swiss boarder Iouri Podladtchikov, or I-Pod.  I-Pod’s first place qualification on Thursday means that he gets to ride last in the finals, a coveted spot that sets up an opportunity to dethrone the Flying Tomato.

White qualified second despite a huge run that included a 19-plus foot backside air that was almost 3 feet higher than any other boarders’ tricks.  He also stomped out frontside and cab double cork 1080s, but didn’t fire up any of his best tricks that landed him gold last year, choosing to save them for the finals instead of engaging in a battle for first place of the prelims.

I-Pod also has tricks up his sleeve.  He plans to unveil a mystery trick in the finals Sunday night that he says no one has ever tried on snow before.  If I-Pod does manage to dethrone White, it will be the first time anyone has beaten him in a three-year period spanning 12 contests.
